Tirupati, January 9
The hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara Swamy was filled with lakhs of devotees on Vaikunta Ekadasi day. Darshan hours were extended. Devotees thronged to see golden chariot procession. VIPs queued up to have Lord darshan from morning hours only. Later ordinary pilgrims were allowed to have darshan. Due to heavy rush, it was taking hours for the darshan. So TTD scrapped arjita seva.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) staff was unable to control the devotees, who crossed barricades. Jostling took place on a large scale. In excitement to see the Lord on the most important festival day, pilgrims pushed each other.
The rush is likely to continue on Monday also. All galleries, compartments and Mada streets were filled with pilgrims. Keeping in view the heavy rush, TTD officials have scrapped arjita seva and recommendation letters.
