Vijayawada, February 2
Gannavaram airport will done an international look with the opening of new terminal building constructed at a cost of Rs 160 crores. The airport officials are waiting for permission, specially from security wing, power and other wings. With the permission in place, activities will be modified within two weeks.
Pipe and wire works related to power supply were completed and air conditioning works are also over. IT line works are going on now.
Special optical fibre cable line under BSNL supervision is being laid for internet and communication facility to the offices in the new terminal. These works would be completed in one week.
Later the Central power department staff will inspect the works. Security related works are also nearing completion. CC cameras, screens and x-ray baggage system were set up and arranging steel gates in front of the terminal building is going on.
Security at six boarding gates, 19 check-in counters, baggage claim carousals, and conveyer belts were arranged. Fire dousing water sprinklers were set up along with smoke detectors. Three permissions regarding the setting up of fire fighting system in the terminal are yet to be given.
As many as 500 passengers can be handled every hour and 20 lakh passengers can travel per annum from this airport.
The State government already wrote a letter to the Central aviation ministry, explaining that they have the required resources and facilities to run international air services from Gannavaram airport. The government is focused on the facilities that are needed.
The officials are expecting announcement in this regard soon after foundation stone is laid for run-way expansion.
