Kurnool, February 13
Despite having abundant water resources, crops in Kurnool district are withering away without power supply. Crops in about 140 acres are getting dried up. Farmers alleged power department officials’ negligence for their present plight.
Groundnut and chilly crops in Ulchala and Basapuram villages in Kurnool mandal in the district are totally dried. The farmers of these villages cultivated the crops in 140 acres depending on bore water.
With the help of power department officials, the farmers have arranged two transformers at a cost of Rs 1.18 lakh. But these transformers are overloaded with more connections. The officials have collected fee from farmers and gave more connections to each transformer thus making them non-functional.
If only the officials gave enough connections to each transformer which it can withstand, then this problem might never have occured. They have given new connections for more revenue.
The officials are not heeding the farmers’ complaints that the transformers are not working. The farmers lamented that linesmen and Assistant Engineers were not heeding to their repeated requests. They lamented that they have invested Rs 80,000 per acre and now with the withered crops they will incur heavy losses.
They requested the government for financial help otherwise, they said that they have no other option except to end their lives.
