Eluru, December 2

The ban of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes has poured cold water on cock fights and several enthusiasts. Normally Rs. 500 or Rs. 1,000 notes will be paid on betting whose volumes run into to crores of rupees. But the punters are not the ones to step back. They are betting in multiples of Rs. 2000 now.

During Sankranti festival, cock fights are a regular feature in West Godavari district for three days with even foreigners coming here to watch them. Even the police officials have to ignore since parliament members, MLAs, people’s representatives, actors and others reportedly participate in these fights.

Already people started grooming cocks for the fights in secret places. Some will raise them for betting while some others breed them. People purchase the cocks based on their breed and even provide strict training to them.

Both cocks and money in cash reach the spot in gunny bags. There is no doubt most of this money is black and through non-taxed agricultural income anyway. Since high denomination notes were scrapped, the punters are busy in collecting Rs. 2,000 notes.
