Despite restrictions, cock fights are organized during Sankranti festival season every year. All arrangements were made to conduct rooster fights this year also and punters are gearing up to take part in the event.
People prepared ground to conduct rooster fights in sugarcane, banana and mango gardens. While a few others erected tents in empty areas and are conducting the game.
Several people are coming to the spots on bikes and cars with huge amounts of cash, since holidays were declared for the festival. They are purchasing cocks for high price and taking part in the event.
Ground was set to conduct the rooster fights in Gannavaram, Penamaluru near Vijayawada; Uyyuru, Diviseema, Nagayalanka, Nuziveedu in Krishna district; and in East and West Godavari districts. Crores of rupees change hands during the game.
People’s representatives, senior officials of various departments and staff are personally supervising the tying of knives to the legs of cocks before leaving them in the fray.
This year a few people’s representatives made arrangements to conduct the cock fights openly. They made all arrangements for the event by spending huge amounts without making their names public.
The police are keeping themselves aloof from these fights and not conducting raids on the preparations going on at various areas.
Following High Court orders, Tahsildar and Sub-Inspector who formed a committee to submit a report are the only ones responding in this regard.
