Since a few days back, Sasikala Natarajan was known to all as a close aide to Tamil Nadu late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. But now she has risen to the CM post. From humble beginnings as a video parlour owner to the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Sasikala journey has many setbacks including corruption allegations.

Sasikala, who became the ‘Chinnamma’ for AIADMK leaders and cadre, was born in a modest family in Thiruthuraipoondi in 1957. Later her family migrated to Mannar Gudi. Sasikala journey started from stopped education with primary school and used to run a video parlour. She met Natarajan, who was working as government PRO and married him in the presence of DMK chief Karunanidhi.

With the help of her husband, Sasikala got contract to record party meetings.

Sasikala got acquainted with Jayalalithaa through Kadalur district collector Chandralekha, who is a close friend to Jayalalithaa. She came close to Jayalalithaa by video recording all her political meetings.

Within a short span, Sasikala became her most endeared friend and shifted her accommodation to Poes Garden.

The consequently post MGR’s death, Jayalalithaa becoming the Chief Minister have became plus point to Sasikala. She used to look after Jayalalithaa’s personal affairs. She even made Jayalalithaa adopt her nephew Sudhakaran. She always used to control the Tamil Nadu politics from behind the screen.

She faced several corruption allegations and even was imprisoned for 30 days along with Jaya regarding colour TV scam.

Jaya has thrown Sasikala and her family out of the Poes Gardens residence two times. She expelled Sasikala, her husband Natarajan, adopted son Sudhakaran and another 10 leaders from the party in 2011.

She kept Sasikala away from her for some time but again brought her back.
Sasikala reportedly looked after party affairs unofficially since the day Jaya was hospitalized in September 2016. She even organized Jaya’s funeral. Later she took over as party general secretary and a few days later was elected as AIADMK legislature party leader.

Party sources said Sasikala is making all arrangements to contest from RK Nagar constituency in the by-poll, after it fell vacant following Jayalalithaa’s demise.
