Chennai, January 12
Tamil Nadu government is leaving no stone unturned to conduct Jallikattu, a bull taming sport. A delegation of AIADMK leaders, lead by Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai on Wednesday met Union Minister of State for Environment Anil Madhav Dave. They requested Dave that the Centre should respect the sentiments of Tamil Nadu people. It should get ordinance since the court is not permitting to hold Jallikattu, they told him.
The Centre assured the AIADMK leaders that it understood their sentiments and they will definitely win their case in the court. ‘There is nothing new to teach the Tamil Nadu people on animal protection, who have a special relation with animals since ages.’ The Centre expressed hope that the apex court will permit to conduct the sport, respecting the tradition.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Panneer Selvam also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to give permission to conduct the sport. He sought him to give importance to the fact that jallikattu has several decades old history in the State and to solve the issue without keeping it pending any more.
Supreme Court banned the sport in May 2014 as per Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The SC rejected the petition filed by Tamil Nadu government last November. The ruling AIADMK is demanding the Central Government to bring an ordinance in favor of conducting Jallikattu.
