New Delhi, February 11

From 2018, the admission in all architecture and engineering colleges for undergraduate courses will be done through a single entrance examination, said the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Friday.

As per the latest order, the government has told All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to issue suitable regulations under the AICTE Act for this. “AICTE is advised to ensure that the testing process is standardised keeping in view the linguistic diversity of the country. The test shall also be conducted multiple times every year”.

National Testing Agency may be entrusted with conducting the examination. The government decided to hold the exam on the lines of medical entrance test NEET. At present KCET in Karnataka and Eamcet in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are being conducted for engineering admissions. JEE Mains for admission into NIT and IIIT and JEE advanced for admission into IIT are being conducted.

It has become a burden for the students to write different exams. The government observed that with single entrance test, the quality in engineering course could be improved besides bringing transparency in engineering college admissions.
