Chandigarh, January 17
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu declared himself a ‘born Congressman’, after formally joining the party before AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday. ‘This is my ghar wapsi ’. ‘My father worked for Congress for about 40 years and I came back to my roots,’ he said.
Sidhu said his fight is against drugs, which has been destroying thousands of youth in Punjab. Criticising the Akali Dal government for failing in controlling the drugs’ menace in the State, he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi neglected his request in this regard.
Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbeer Singh Badal compared Sidhu with a human bomb. ‘It is not the party that Sidhu changed, but it is mother. He will leave Congress within six months. Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal criticized that Sidhu was a sell-out to Congress.
There are chances that Sidhu may contest from Amritsar east constituency, on which he has not given any clarity. Amarinder Singh is the only single Congress candidate in Punjab and with Sidhu, the strength was doubled.
Sidhu is going to work as the party’s star campaigner. He did not deny the news that he will be the chief ministerial candidate on behalf of the party.
Even before Sidhu, his wife Navjot Kaur had joined Congress and said that ghar wapsi. Sidhu reportedly resigned for Rajya Sabha MP post and BJP membership as he was not given due priority in state politics.
