Lucknow, January 4
Another patch-up bid between the warring factions of the Samajwadi Party fell flat on Tuesday as even after a three-hour meeting, CM Akhilesh Yadav and party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav failed to make peace. The father and son duo are reportedly fixed on their conditions.
In a meeting held on Tuesday that extended for about three hours it was revealed that the only way Akhilesh would consider retreating from his position would be if he was given freedom in ticket distribution. His other conditions are Mulayam to continue as party national president and suspension of Shivpal Yadav as UP state president post and to retain him for national politics only. Akhilesh also demanded expulsion of Amar Singh and endorsement of party post and powers to Ramgopal Yadav, to which Mulayam did not agree.
Earlier senior leader Azam Khan tried to settle scores between father and son after which Akhilesh spoke with his father over phone. Immediately after this conversation, Mulayam went from Delhi to Lucknow by a chartered special plane to meet his son.
On the other hand, party senior leader Ramgopal Yadav stressed that there is no question of truce in Samajwadi Party. He said they are ready to fight the election with their national leader Akhilesh.
Ramgopal met the Election Commission seeking bicycle symbol. He requested the EC to allot the symbol to Akhilesh party since he had 90 per cent of his Party MLAs supporting him.
Meanwhile, Mulayam Singh Yadav also requested the EC to retain the bicycle symbol to their party only.
The Akhilesh camp had indicated that while it is willing to consider accepting Mulayam Singh Yadav as the national president, his will be largely a ceremonial role. Akhilesh Yadav will be the working president and will have the final say in the distribution of tickets in the forthcoming assembly elections.
Mulayam Singh, who was removed from his position as party president and was anointed ‘Margdarshak’, was also given the option of giving Shivpal a national role in party affairs and allow Akhilesh to get more breathing space in Lucknow to manage party affairs.
