Chandigarh, January 21
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu’s entry into Congress has breathed life into the party. Now he has became the star campaigner for the party.
Punjab is the only State which can give strength to Congress. It pinned its hopes on the strong public opposition on Shiromani Akalidal and BJP’s 10-year rule. But the Aam Admi Party (AAP) which won four MP seats during 2014 Lok Sabha elections is worrying the Congress.
To win the elections at any cost this time, Congress is trying to woo BJP and AAP leaders. Captain Amarinder Singh is trying to use the sentiment point by announcing that this will be his last elections.
The Punjabis reportedly felt that Amarinder Singh is a far better leader than Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and his son and Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.
AAP leader Daljir Singh also joined Congress. Navjot Singh Sidhu joined the Congress over an agreement that he should be given Deputy CM post and Amritsar MP ticket to his wife, Navjyoth Kaur, if Congress comes to power and now became star campaigner.
Sidhu has been Amritsar MP from 2004 to 2014 and had to leave his post for Arun Jaitley. He left BJP as he never favoured BJP alliance with Akalidal. Amidst rumours that he will shake hands with AAP, he launched his own party ‘Awaz e Punjab’ and joined Congress.
Congress won 46 seats in 2012 Assembly elections. The ruling SAD got 56 and its alliance party BJP won 12 seats. Now the Congress has to win 59 seats of the total 117 to come to the power.
