Hyderabad, February 10
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has no clarity over the number of cell towers in the city. It even does not know whether to implement property tax rule for them or not.
With allegations pouring in, GHMC officials decided to conduct inspections at ground level and to count the number of cell towers per company.
It was alleged that the GHMC is losing good annual property tax revenue from cell towers since the GHMC has no data about them.
GHMC has to check building permission and other documents before giving permission to construct a cell tower. While the officials say only 969 towers have permission in the city, one can see tens of cell towers at every place.
Rs one lakh has to be paid for GHMC permission to erect a cell tower. To evade this amount, cell companies owners are erecting towers without permission.
On the other hand, Reliance Company is erecting towers at every place to provide free wifi services recently. As the government issued orders to give permission without any restrictions, the company has been erecting cell towers by paying Rs one lakh and by providing details of the tower.
GHMC will get a whopping amount of Rs 50 crore revenue if only it collects fee from cell towers, erected without permission. The GHMC treasury will get Rs 6 crore per annum with Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 property tax from each tower.
