Hyderabad, January 27
Extremely upset over being left out among the various other sports persons in the list announced this year for the country’s highest civilian awards, Padma Awards, doubles badminton specialist Jwala Gutta on Thursday said that she was expecting to be acknowledged for her achievements.
Stating that she had applied three times earlier for the Padma Sri award, she lamented that she was being ignored purposefully.
“I have been playing for this country for more than 15 years now and have won so many prestigious tournaments. I applied for the award since I thought I have all qualifications. But you need recommendations to get an award. If recommendations are needed to get an award, then where is the need to invite applications?’ she questioned.
She said “I was world number 6 in mix doubles and world number 10 in women’s doubles. Still I didn’t get it. It is a little hurtful.”
‘It seems that my gold medal in Delhi Commonwealth games, silver medal in Glasco, world championship medals, 15 times national championship and many others are not enough for Padma award.’ She wondered all those who came after her are getting medals except her.
Jwala Gutta said she will open badminton academy in future and added that she is considering entering into politics. But, she did not reveal when it will be.
