Hyderabad, February 9

Electricity consumers in Telangana will be in for a shock, albeit mildly, as the State Government is considering increasing power tariff.

The two power distribution companies are proposing a tariff hike to recover Rs 2,000 crore from consumers in 2017-18. But the Government is against burdening the consumers with power tariff hikes.

According to Discom officials, the power distribution expenditure in 2017-18 would be around Rs 31,930 crores. Accordingly a report of Discom’s annual expenditure was submitted to TS Electricity Regulatory Commission in November last year. As per this report, the officials estimated a deficit of Rs 6,857 crore in next year.

The officials are busy making plans to offset the deficit of power companies. They are yet to decide whether request the Government to increase the subsidy or to fill the gap by increasing the tariff.

It may be recalled that the Government had hinted a subsidy of less than Rs 5,000 crore in 2017-18 to Discoms, which made the officials to think about tariff hike. If this happens, then the consumers will have to bear a burden of about Rs 2,000 crore.

But domestic consumers may be exempted from the hike. Compared to the present tariff, hike will be 7 to 8 per cent and new tariff may come into effect from April 1 this year.
