Hyderabad, January 25
Telangana Telugu Desam Party (TTDP) is all set to fight to prevent uranium mining in Telangana.
A few private companies have identified uranium deposits near Amrabad forest area in Nagar Kurnool district and gearing up to dig.
18 village panchayats in Amrabad mandal near Nallamala forest area are in the grip of uranium mining. Forest department officials found out that several wild animals, along with 17 tigers are taking shelter in the forest area.
Besides, Krishna River also will be effected by uranium mining, since Amrabad forest area is beside Nagarjuna Sagar dam. If Krishna River waters get affected, then the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad may have to face drinking water problem.
At the same time, the low level areas of Nagarjuna Sagar also will reportedly incur heavy losses. According to sources, the Debeers company, which got permission from the then Congress government for diamonds mining, is now trying to get permission for uranium mining also.
In this context, TTDP is going to fight to stop uranium mining. A massive public meeting, led by TTDP working president A Revanth Reddy, is also plannced in Amrabad, demanding the government not to give permission for uranium mining, which will incur heavy loss to tribals.
TTDP leaders are quoting the situation in uranium-affected areas in Jharkhand, where children with physical defects are taking birth, people suffering with skin-related cancer. They warned that Telangana people also have to face these health disorders if it permits mining here.
They reminded about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki incidents of world war II, where the people after about 70 years are still suffering.
