Nirmal, January 4
The surveys by irrigation, revenue, DWAMA, forest and Panchayat Raj departments have revealed shocking truths about encroachments of lakebeds in Nirmal. The encroachments have reached its peak.
There were 11 linked lakes in Nirmal during the Kakatiya kings regime. Hundreds of acres of land were being cultivated and drinking water was supplied from these tanks only.
The growth in Nirmal town have skyrocketed the land rates. This lured the encroachers who occupied the tanks in Gajulapet, Dharmasagar, Manjulapur, Kancharoni and Surannapet areas and plots and flats appeared in the place.
Real estate ventures are appearing in lakebeds. Revenue department officials, instead of preventing the illegal constructions, never bothered to intervene.
Taking advantage of the loopholes in several Acts, the land encroachers are creating fake certificates.
With the High Court’s recent verdict to remove illegal constructions on lakebeds, the encroachments’ issue regained prominence.
The Pedda Cheruvu in Bhagya Nagar Colony in Nirmal used to supply irrigation water to Manjulapur and also Nirmal. But the land grabbers encroached this tank and constructed sky scrap buildings.
The land grabbing continues in Bhagya Nagar, Priyadarshini Nagar, tank near Bhainsa road.
The locals criticized the officials for failing to prevent encroachment of waterbeds.
At this juncture, the government has taken the encroachment of waterbeds on a serious note and prepared plans to restore 474 tanks in Nirmal circle.
